Located along Green Spring Highway in Homewood, Cheap Chick Trading Company is the newest store to hit the thrifting scene here in Birmingham. By selling their inventory of gently used clothing and accessories, Cheap Chick Trading Company aims to reduce the amount of clothing that ends up in landfills.

Cheap Chick is the brainchild of Shannon and Bart Styes, who also owns Wild Roast Café in Bluff Park. Shannon first had the idea for Cheap Chick 11 years ago, but had to put the project on hold to raise her third child.

“During the pandemic, Bart and I started researching this industry. We found that the used clothing industry is set to triple, and Gen Z has totally embraced recycling and reusing clothing and other items. We knew that now was the time to make Cheap Chick happen.”

What makes Cheap Chick Trading Company different?

As Bham Now reported last year, Cheap Chick Trading Company is not a typical consignment store. Instead, its a clothing resale shop. Since Cheap Chick buys clothing outright from their customers, they don’t have to wait for items to sell in order to get paid.

“At Cheap Chick, we go through your items and select what we want to buy. We’ll make you an offer, and then we’ll pay you on the spot—either cash or store credit. We’ll pay 30% of our selling price in cash, or you can get 50% of our selling price in store credit. It’s a lot easier than trying to keep up with ticketed consignment sales—we wanted to make it really easy for the customer to bring in clothing and leave with cash.”

Since Cheap Chick is locally-owned, this business model helps keep money in the community. In fact, roughly 90% of Cheap Chick’s sales are of items that were bought from customers here in Birmingham.

Since Cheap Chick Trading Company is a resale shop, you’ll never know exactly what you’ll find—inventory will change every day!

“With Cheap Chick Trading Company, we wanted to create a resale shopping experience that felt just like going to a retail clothing store. We have new products all the time, because our customers are bringing us new things for people to look at. We have something for everyone—men, women and children. We want to carry fun & colorful brands and styles, but we aren’t pretentious—we’ll buy anything if we think there is a market for it!”
